The last 50 years has seen the attitudes to both sex and marriage change out of all recognition. This section looks at these attitudes in England and elsewhere when important, back to Biblical times.
Such a topic could be considered by some to be not suitable for the under fourteens so the editors have decided to restrict viewing to those with a credit card. This at the same time allows the subjects to be detailed explicitly. However some of the main findings are as follows.
Marriage
- The world is divided into Christians who believe in the concept of one man one woman and the Muslim world (and many African countries) where up to 4 wives are permitted.
- Jesus the founder of Christianity had nothing to say on the subject. Moses 3500 years ago, clearly accepted the concept of more than one wife.
- It was the Romans who before the birth of Jesus ruled in favour of one wife but simply to protect large properties. Romans were allowed as many mistress slaves as they could afford. Early Christians followed the Roman laws of marriage as Jerusalem was ruled by the Romans at the time.
- Kings of England were more likely to have mistress than not and sired many illegitimate children who generally ended up as part of the landed gentry.
- In France, Kings and any body else who could afford them, like Army generals would flout their mistresses in public. The Kings mistress in favour would be better dressed than the Queen and always be at the Kings side at Royal occasions. As late as Victorian times the English army was astonished to find that French officers would always come to war with their mistress.
- The demise of the royal mistress in England commenced in Victorian times. However King William 4th 1830-37, King Edward 7th and most recently Price Charles the next in line to the English throne all had mistresses. Camilla, the long time mistress of Charles and now his wife has been fully accepted into the royal house hold. Probably a first.
- 50 years ago over 95% of girls on their wedding nights would be a virgin. The figure in year 2000 was the other way round. 95% of girls would have enjoyed sex before marriage.
- 50 years ago a child born out of wedlock would have been called a bastard. The term is now never used. Today girls who have children are not concerned if they are married or not. 50 years ago an unmarried girl with a child would dare not show her face to her friends and relations and would quite often move from her area.
Sex
- Like marriage attitudes to sex are divided between the Christian West and the peoples of the East.
- The Christian Church preaches that sex is for procreation and should not be practiced unless trying for a baby (Roman Catholics) Hence the use of contraceptives is forbidden.
- Those in the East, from as early as 2000 years ago, claimed that a sexual climax was the nearest thing on earth to heaven and couples should study and practice techniques to achieve this “likeness to heaven” simultaneously.
Englishmen who travelled and lived in India in Georgian times discovered the superior sexual techniques offered by the scantily clad (by English standards) dusky Indian girls. Many brought their Indian concubines home and were surprised to find their wives hostile to sharing their privileges.
